What is the Diversity Visa lottery?

The visa lottery is a Diversity Visa program administered by the Department of State as an approach to expand the diversity of the foreigners coming to live in the United States.

Annually, about 50,000 randomly selected foreigners from countries that don’t send enough immigrants to the US are granted permanent residence (normally called a “green card”) in the US through the Diversity Visa program. It’s a path for people and families who in any case wouldn’t have any legal way to move to the United States to get a green card.

Entering the Diversity Visa lottery (otherwise known as the green card lottery) doesn’t cost anything as it involves completing a simple form online. Applicants can enter the draw from early October through early November. Winners are randomly selected by a computer and they and their immediate families are issued green cards.

History of the Diversity Visa

As a way to increase the diversity among United States immigrants, the Diversity Visa was established by the Immigration Act of 1990. There are lot of countries where the bunch of immigrants to the US comes from, in a bid to increase diversity, the DV lottery was established to allow smaller countries to send as many immigrants to the United States.

The Diversity Visa is the primary responsibility of the U.S. State Department. The State Department runs the lottery and chooses winners. An estimated 95% of the DV lottery winners get their green card through the State Department as they are residents outside of the US when they are announced as winners.

Because the Diversity Visa exists presently doesn’t imply that it isn’t liable to change. A few past and current immigration reform bills in Congress would take out the program altogether, however, for the time being, none of these propositions have been authorized at this point.

Who Is Qualified for the Diversity Visa?

In order to be eligible for the Diversity Visa, you must be a citizen from a country that has sent less than 50,000 immigrants to the United States over the last 5 years. There is some yearly variation in eligible countries, however, countries like Canada, China, India, Mexico, and the United Kingdom never make the list of eligible countries, because yearly they send a large number of immigrants to the United States.

In the event that country isn’t qualified, there are as yet two different ways you could still qualify for the Diversity Visa:

On the off chance that your spouse/partner is a citizen from an eligible country, you can apply with your spouse/partner by choosing your spouse/partner’s country on your application.

In the event that neither of your parents was legitimate residents in your country of birth, you can choose between your father or mother’s birth country.

Having at least secondary school degree is an obligate requirement when applying for the DV lottery, or a minimum of two years of relatable work experience in the last 5 years in a profession that requires a minimum of 2 years training, as specified by the U.S. Department of Labor.
